Have you heard this common saying? – “It is not what you say but how you say it”. When you want to get noticed by your teacher, friend, parents and seniors – sound good. Better put – use your voice to capture the attention of others and get your point across. Since humans hear the sound behind the words first before thinking about the choice of words. So you wouldn’t want to scream and shout because you are not heard, that just sounds over the top and disrespectful. Make a good impression by learning how to project and modulate your voice. Otherwise, you can lose the interest of a person in almost an instant as there’s no purpose to your words. In Personality Development, we call this ‘Tone of Voice’ and is an important aspect of effective communication. For more on how to improve read on below.

Most people don’t even realise how they actually sound like. So to start off, first examine how you speak. Ideally listen to a recording of yourself such as of you talking to someone on the phone. Which one of these words describes your sound the best?

  • Casual / Dull / Shy / Nervous / Apologetic / Weak
  • If at any point you sound like this you need to make work on improving because ‘A’ you are quite likely feeling the same which is bringing you down. And ‘B’ since you sound it you are projecting it onto others too.
  • Think about it, if you were to sound ‘happy’ it’s a step closer to feeling,  projecting and being perceived as happy.
  • Wouldn’t you be more interesting to listen to?

Parts of Tone of Voice

When you alter these 4 parts of your voice it will change the way you sound. To sound pleasing, you need to find a comfortable middle ground between all four.

1 – Speed

  • How fast or slow do you speak?
  • When we speak fast others will find it difficult to catch on to what you want to convey.
  • Slow speakers drag the conversation and lose the attention of the listener.

2 – Pitch

  • How high or low do you speak?
  • A high pitch voice sounds abrasive.
  • Voices that are low in pitch demand others to listen in which can be a struggle to do.

3 – Pause

  • When there is a lack of pauses this causes your ideas to run together and this makes it hard to decipher your message.
  • Use of too many pauses causes an interruption of the listener’s train of thought.

4 – Word Stress

  • If you are monotone there is no stress to any particular word. Your sentences sound the same and are ‘lifeless’.
  • Bring emphasis to a word and it will give it higher importance.
  • It also provides energy and thus brings excitement to your message.

This is what you need to do?

Read a book out a loud and put some energy into the words. Sounds novel, right? But it works!

  • When a character is happy, express happiness.
  • When the situation is sad, sound sad.
  • Change it up, first read it fast then slow … high then low … use pauses and then stress on random words.
  • Listen to how the meaning changes.
  • Try it now with this quick sentence – “Hi, wow what great shoes you are wearing. Where did you buy it from?”
  • It’s very hard to believe the excitement of the sentence when you say it with sadness. 🙂
