We feel depressed when we think we are missing out on something in our lives. I have caught myself out a few times, when I see my friends doing amazing things or when they look stunning or when they purchased something new or when I miss my home… gosh, that’s a lot 😛 . And I’m just the same old, plodding along with life. It’s common and at some point of time anyone would have and should have experienced it (it’s normal to feel depressed sometimes). And yes there are medical cases (seek a doctor’s opinion) but first try to work this one out yourself. It can be all just a mental game. No one feels awesome all the time, but it is how they come out of it that in actual fact matters. If you know how to stop feeling depressed you’ll not only feel great and be productive, others will be inspired from your positive personality too. Here’re some handy ways to get out of this hole.

1 – Get Busy

  • There are things we need to do, so get stuck into it. If it’s a struggle dedicate only 10 minutes to that task and who knows by that end of that 10 you’d feel motivated to keep on going.
  • Find something enjoyable to do read a book, gym it, write, draw, build, create, whatever floats your boat.
  • Would you like to start on some type of project? Or learn a new skill. Fill in time with a hobby or work.
  • Now if you don’t have time, make it!!! It’s important to have ‘me time’. This is so not selfish. When you feel well that is only when you can take care of others as well, be it job or family. Take 30 minutes, daily or every other day. Just make sure this happens often enough that of every week.

2 – Socialise

  • Make and maintain your friends and family. When you appreciate others, in return they will appreciate you. It’s a good feel factor all around.
  • Make contact with them by phone and message.
  • Ideally in person as stronger connections can be made. You could invite to meet at the mall, for dinner or even a quick pop in at their house is always welcoming.
  • Join a club, class or hobby class. It’s a great chance to hang out with people who share the same interest as you.

3 – Talk it Out

  • Talk to someone who seems to be in a similar predicament. When others relate, you feel to a degree at ease since you won’t feel alone.
  • Feeling stuck? Not so close to anyone? – Ask the first person who has asked about you (“how are you?). Get them in a moment when they are not busy and tell them you need to talk to them.
  • Didn’t quite work out? – Start by being a friend yourself. Ask another how they are? Or how was their day?

4 – Relax

Sometimes when we feel low we just can’t get over it. At these times, it is wise to take a step back from the situation and be in the present moment, don’t think about something that had happened in the past and what your future could be.

  • Visualize – Lie down on your back, close your eyes and no part of your body should be tensed.
  • Imagine you are in a peaceful place. I like to think that I’m in a quiet green park, with the sound of a trickling water fountain nearby and the cool breeze going through my hair. Cheesy, but it does change up my mood. 🙂
  • Listen to soothing music or even dance.
  • Take up Yoga.
  • Go out and window/shop, to your park and take a walk amongst nature, or spend time in a quiet library.
  • Pray.
  • Take this moment, in preparation to start fresh again.

5 – Gratitude

Nothing seems right? – you may not know it, but there is someone out there envying you right this minute. Gratitude shows that your situation might not be as bad as you think it is.

  • What 5 things are you grateful of today?
  • Start small like you have clothing on your back, you eat well, and have a roof over your head and so on.
  • Once those basics are all out of the way you could start with things as I have parents, husband, and children, whatever that is.
  • I’m in good health and I’m educated.
  • Anything unique to you? – that’s a bonus

Want to be happy? Then have a go at these points. You’ll find that you end up putting less attention on thinking and feeling depressed. As a result, you start to live in the moment which in turn is the building blocks towards a peaceful future.

Until next time.
